good morning. please consider stepping out of your Story for the last time and half a dozen plush kobolds all want you to read the fan fiction they wrote about you

Show thread

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now

they're pushing past each other, tripping and falling into a little pile, their arms outstretched and clutching well-loved sheets of paper. one or two of them have fan art they want you to look at of that one time you were really cool, but nobody saw

the nice thing about your subs being plush is that you can play pretty roughly with them and they don't mind. if anything, it's fun to be thrown across the room when your Lady is annoyed, get whacked with her tail into the kitchen and told to come back with snacks, pick two of them up and make them kiss to help explain a concept, you name it.

even if a seam gets ripped, it just means you get to cuddle into your Lady's big, strong arms while she sews you up.

one of the Lady's specialties is knowing precisely where your boundaries lie and helping nudge you right up to them because she loves watching you grow as a person. she knows what names make you squirm and just how deep you like her claws digging into you while she whispers in your ear.

or, say, where you like to be hit with a hurled book so you fall off the ladder right into her waiting arms.

some of her toys stay kobolds forever, some of them shift between a more important named role in the Library- her librarians, her archivists, her costume designers, her chefs, and so on- and being a kobold who just has to worry about getting their belly rubbed enough. Few things are truly permanent in the Autumn Court, after all, including the Library itself.

Imagine waking up in this ur-example of a library. Bookshelves lining the walls that stretch to the ceilings. Kobolds riding around on those wheeled ladders, shelving books and occasionally throwing them at each other. Some of them curled up and having a nap in a sunbeam on one of the impossibly comfy chairs. They wave to you and direct you towards the one door. And, right on the other side, is the Lady, penning something with one of her quills. She greets you with a big, friendly smile. "Oh! Goodness, you're ahead of schedule. I'm sure you have so many questions. Come along, come along." She leads you back through the same door, into a different room where the kobolds have put together a little party for you.

You get to sit among them and listen to the Lady read your Story out loud, doing the voices and everything. The kobolds cheer for you when you do something cool and share your tears and offer comfort during the sad parts and there's always a few leaning up against you or trying to climb into your lap.

when she finishes, you are invited to think about where you'd like to be in her Library. She thinks you'd make a lovely Muse, helping her grow and nourish the Stories. She encourages you to think about how you'd redesign yourself, unbound by the constraints of reality. And, of course, take all the time you need. And if you need to talk to someone, you know where to find her. She always has time for her favorite mortals.

Mostly because time doesn't really mean anything here in Arcadia, but it's a sweet gesture.

I'm almost wondering if her name is just "the Lady of the Library" or something like that. "Pendragon" is a little joke she uses as a fake name sometimes.

Show thread

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now

she probably has a more flowery name/title for fancy introductions and fae court business, but "the Lady" or "my Lady" is good enough most of the time.

Show thread

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now

another good gag is that she's adopted so many names and titles over the ageless years, it would take far too long to say all of it

the last one who tried announcing her full name at some party or another is still there, barely keeping up as new ones are added and others shift or fall off. she checks in on them every now and again to provide moral support in the form of her brisk-yet-warm smile

she doesn't really have a firm grasp on what things are like on Earth, given that she can really only know about it through story. she's usually pretty close, but even mortals offering factual accounts of things that happened are just another Story to her.

which leads to situations where she'll visit Earth and, even once she gets used to the gravity and knowing intellectually that she has to adopt a humansona, she still, say, expects to skip over the boring parts and has to learn how to do things without her kobolds close at claw.

Show thread

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, food?

when she makes food in her Library, there's a lot of measuring, mixing, putting stuff in the oven, and whatnot, but a mortal doing the same thing would get a burnt mess instead of the pie she pulls out of the oven and sets cooling on the windowsill.

Which, of course, is something of a rude awakening when she tries to cook something on Earth for the first time without really understanding the point of a recipe

it's often said that a faerie would help you plan their own murder if it made a good enough Story

the Lady will help you plan her murder, paint a literal target on her back, explain which scales are the weakest and which weapons work best, give you a copy of her schedule, and basically treat it like a surprise party

it goes off without a hitch, of course. even her last words are scripted in advance. the kobolds all speak and cry at her funeral, then she climbs out of the casket before they eat all the good food at the reception.

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now

in this essay, i will show that the difference between a distinguished and disaster lesbian is merely a matter of context-

she understands that a recipe is one part of making a dish, alongside ingredients, tools, and the physical act of mixing things together and heating them and whatnot, but the actual interaction often isn't important to the Story. Unless the actual act of cooking is part of the Story- the act of mixing eggs is a metaphor for two becoming one or something- she simply needs to suggest cooking, or even just cut to the kitchen being dirty and the pie being done.

Show thread

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

so, when she's on Earth, she realizes she's never had to actually follow the directions on this scrap of food paper, and she certainly doesn't have much context for what words like "simmer" or "preheat the oven" mean.

Show thread

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

it's the same with having the kobolds do it- they go have a montage where they fight over who gets to wear the chef hat, have a mishap with the electric blender, form a stack to get something out of a high cupboard and get knocked over when stuff comes falling out, and then end on them all admiring the pie.

Show thread

Even if she had the kobolds at hand on Earth, it's kind of a "how many creatures of story does it take to figure out what a roux is"

Show thread

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

there's a weird question of "how much has she actually learned from Stories", and the answer is, of course, "whatever works for her Story". If it would be more interesting for her to do the thing competently, that's what happens. Her abilities are dampened when she's on Earth, mostly just enough to maintain her humansona, but she retains the "what she actually knows is undefined until she has to put it into practice" trait.

@BestGirlGrace i wonder if part of why she tends to be a little big of a disaster on earth is because unfortunately, that's one of the easier stories to settle into; it also lets her save up some secret power for a come from behind "save everything out of nowhere if things go badly" twist if she really needs it

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@junebug Precisely! Especially if you have a trusted mortal on hand to help you through stuff, being the fish out of water is an easy role to play. Plus, she knows her mortals usually enjoy the role reversal.

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@junebug also also: it's nice to take a little break from being the pillar everyone looks to, you know? sometimes it feels nice to fuck up making a pie and have it not be a big deal.

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@BestGirlGrace and like, the question of "well are you actually unsure what to do or is that just your story" is probably a question she wouldn't even fully like, understand? like she IS story. it's like asking are you alive or are you real, it's nonsensical.

To the extent she does understand it, the blurriness of that line is probably something she enjoys and finds comfort/safety in.

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@junebug Yeah, that's a really good point. Her whole existence is playing some role or another in a Story. The Lady of the Library doesn't really exist independent of whatever Story she's in at the time. Whether that's "big, sexy dragon welcomes you to her Library" or "fae gf doesn't know how to make popcorn because it always just appeared at appropriate times before".

There is some sense of self that persists between roles, of course, and that blurry line is one thing she loves. It means that she can change things about herself to suit the story and her own wants, and keep the things she likes the same.

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@junebug If you pressed her about the pie thing enough, she'd probably slip "out of character" a bit and be willing to have basically the conversation we're having now, and that might change the character she's playing, but probably not by much.

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@BestGirlGrace yeah. it's not that she's just stories without a real identity; it's that her identity is, in many ways, stories. they're hand in hand.

she is, simply, the lady of the library. and she'd like you to show her more about this videogame you're so excited about, please, continue

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@junebug Yeah!

She exists outside time, and has access to every story that has exist, will exist, or could exist, and those two work together to create, say, "you get to explain Metal Gear to her for the first time while she coils around you and watches". She doesn't know everything because that would ruin the ending. She can know anything.

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@junebug well, less "ruin the ending", but "it wouldn't be as fun"

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@BestGirlGrace one nice benefit of this is you'll never watch a movie with her that has a random dog dying halfway through that you aren't emotionally prepared for

she always just, knows what the two of you can handle, without spoiling the experience somehow

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@junebug You're about to pick something that looks interesting from the video store or streaming service, but she just kinda puts her claw over your hand, and you feel a distinct, autumnal chill. She shakes her head and nudges you one to the right.

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@junebug @BestGirlGrace "I don't want to be a protagonist today. I have enough of those stories tucked away already!"

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now, back to the pie example

@Balina @junebug "Do you know how hard it is being the main character? I'm on vacation!"

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now

@BestGirlGrace she is, however, an expert at knowing *exactly* when would be the best time for you to arrive.

"we should be... exactly 3 minutes late. oh? we won't have to leave for another twenty minutes for that? oh, huh. confusing"

just thinking about fae dragon stuff now

@junebug She's not used to clocks being more than, like, set dressing, outside of thematically important times of day like High Noon, Midnight, and Five o' Clock, but she knows all about being fashionably late and what you have to do to have "just missed" that guy who insulted her cool scarf last time.
